Instead of having a smooth, flexible body like most fish, it has a hard, box-like shell that gives it a square shape with sharp edges and flat sides. Its color is usually a vivid, glowing yellow, often covered in small black spots—especially when it’s young. Juvenile yellow boxfish are especially striking, looking almost like little floating dice in the water. It has tiny fins that flutter quickly to help it move, which makes it swim in a slow, hovering, almost clumsy way.
