Did you know: The number 666 wasn’t originally about Satan at all. It was a coded reference to Emperor Nero. In the ancient world, people used gematria, where letters double as numbers. When “Nero Caesar” is written in Hebrew (Neron Qesar) and the letters are added up, the total is 666. It was basically a numerical alias. Early Christians were under Roman rule, and Nero was infamous for brutal persecution. Writing his name outright would’ve been dangerous, so the author of Revelation used a code instead. The text never calls 666 “Satan’s number.” It calls it the number of the Beast, and the Beast is described as a man—a ruler who demands loyalty and sets himself up as god. That’s why many scholars link it to the Antichrist, not the devil himself. There’s even an early variant of the number—616—which comes from a different spelling of Nero’s name. Same person. Same meaning.
