There are cool easy fixes available and a couple of great mods that completely enhance nearly every aspect of game play without altering the true spirit of the developers creation. Namely Redux and Realism+Redux, a combination of the two best mods. - Hope you gain some inspiration from the link I provided. You deserve to see the game the way it was meant to be played which the mods provide, and armed with the hidden knowledge of game mechanics that will open up new and beneficial opportunities of enjoyment for you.
